GDP Report Shows Increasing Positivity for Nonresidential Construction

Nonresidential fixed investment grew 5.5 percent in the third quarter after expanding 9.7 percent in the second quarter, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ Oct. 30 gross domestic product (GDP) report. It has now expanded by greater than 5 percent in four of the past five quarters. In addition, investment in equipment increased 7.2 percent, while investment in nonresidential structures increased 3.8 percent.

OSHA Released Directive for Inspecting Cranes on the Jobsite

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Oct. 23 issued a directive for OSHA compliance personnel on how to enforce its 2010 standard for construction cranes and derricks. The directive, which covers jobsites where power-operated equipment covered by Subpart CC – Cranes and Derricks in Construction are present, provides guidance for OSHA inspectors on how to conduct site visits, interpret the rule, and decide when to issue citations.

Dynamic President to Lead Next Phase

After more than 30 years with one chief staff officer, Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington (ABC) is looking for its next president, opening up an opportunity to lead the staff of one of the strongest chapters in ABC.  

With the challenges the construction economy has faced in recent years, the president and staff have had to dynamically produce new resources and new ways of meeting the changing demands of its members in safety training and services; supervisory and management education; and networking opportunities. The nature of delivery of service and member events has changed as members have had new and increasing demands on their time.  Even what members see as “valuable” has shifted, opening new opportunities and challenges.  One thing that hasn’t changed: the political and labor relations environment is West Coast progressive and strongly pro-union – not particularly Merit Shop friendly.
