ABC Files Suit Against DOL’s Overreaching ‘Persuader Rule’

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 30 – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), ABC of Arkansas and a coalition of stakeholders announced today they have filed a joint lawsuit challenging the final “persuader rule” issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) on March 24, 2016. The legal challenge was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

National Craft Champions Highlighted in Local Media Coverage

This year’s National Craft Championships featured a record 210 participants, with competitors from 32 states showcasing their skills in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In addition to being honored at NCC, this year’s competitors have also gained significant coverage in their local media. Leading up to and in the month since NCC, competitors have been featured in 23 news outlets.

Nine in Ten Workforce Week ’16 Attendees Surveyed Plan to Attend Next Year

ABC Workforce Week ’16 attracted well over 500 attendees, with 55 educational sessions, 50+ exhibitors and plenty of excitement. Surveyed shortly after the conference, 91 percent said they planned on returning next year. Highlights included the ABC Innovation Theater, where attendees got a chance to see into future of the construction industry with the latest in software technology, a live exoskeleton demonstration and drone display. ABC Workforce Week '16 was a remarkable demonstration of what makes our association great.

February Construction Unemployment Rates Improve in 41 States from 2015

Temperatures remained above normal for much of the country in February. However, precipitation rates were also above normal for much of the East and below normal for much of the West and parts of the South. These factors contributed to the not seasonally adjusted (NSA) construction unemployment rates for the nation maintaining a low February rate of 8.7 percent, a slight rise from January’s similarly low 8.5 percent rate. It was also the second lowest February national construction
unemployment rate going back to the beginning of the series in 2000, surpassed only by the 8.6 percent rate in February 2006.

For forty years, the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has been promoting and defending the principals of the merit shop philosophy in San Diego. The merit shop way of doing business encourages open competition and a free-enterprise approach to construction. Integral to our mission, is the promotion of world-class apprentice, trainee and journeymen training programs. We seek the following position to lead our continuing success in this area:

Responsibilities:

The Executive Director is responsible for the executive oversight, operation and administration of the ABC San Diego Training Trust. Training activities under this oversight include multiple craft (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, sheet metal, and electrical systems) apprenticeship and trainee programs with over 500 students actively enrolled. Additionally, journeymen training programs fall under the purview of the Training Trust.

Experience:

Qualified individuals will have at least five years’ experience successfully managing a non-profit organization, preferably one with a training/educational mission. In-depth knowledge of ERISA Trusts, tax and financial reporting required. This executive will be adept at managing teams, public speaking and legislative advocacy.

WASHINGTON, March 24—The Construction Industry Safety Coalition (CISC) has concerns with the final rule on respirable crystalline silica released today by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). It appears, upon initial review, that the 1,772-page final rule contains some of the same problematic provisions that the CISC previously identified and shared with the agency. CISC has been a highly engaged participant in the rulemaking process since OSHA put forth the proposed rule two and a half years ago.
