CBO Releases Report on House-passed AHCA

On May 24, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a report with estimates on the costs and overall effect of H.R. 1628, the American Health Care Act. This is the third report to come from the CBO since the bill was introduced in March. If the U.S. Senate passes the bill in its current form, the CBO estimates that the bill would reduce the federal deficit by $119 billion between 2017 and 2026 – $32 billion less than the original bill would have reduced.

Missouri Governor Signs ABC-supported Law to Protect Taxpayers, Construction Industry from Project Labor Agreement Mandates; ABC Urges Federal Action

WASHINGTON, May 30—Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today applauded Gov. Eric Greitens (R-Mo.) for signing legislation into law that will promote fair and open competition on contracts for construction services funded by Missouri taxpayers. SB 182 ensures controversial project labor agreements (PLAs) cannot be mandated by the government on state, state-assisted and local construction projects, guaranteeing that the almost three out of four members of Missouri’s private construction workforce who have chosen not to join a labor union can fairly compete to work on projects funded by their own tax dollars.

Construction Unemployment Rates Improve in 22 States

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 30—April not seasonally adjusted (NSA) construction unemployment rates were down in 22 states and unchanged in two (Arkansas and California) on a year-over-year basis, according to analysis released today by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). However, the national NSA construction unemployment rate of 6.3 percent was up 0.3 percent from April 2016, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Study: Project Labor Agreement Mandates Inflate Cost of Construction 13 Percent

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 25— A study released today by The Beacon Hill Institute found that Ohio schools built under government-mandated project labor agreements (PLAs) cost 13.12 percent more than schools that were bid and constructed through fair and open competition, free from PLA requirements. The study looked at 88 schools built in Ohio since 2000 and found that those built under a PLA mandate cost $23.12 more per square foot than projects built without PLA mandates.

Legislation Introduced to Reform Davis-Bacon Act

On May 22nd, U.S. Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) introduced The Opportunity in Construction Act, which aims to reform the way the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) calculates prevailing wages under the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act.  Sen. Flake’s bill directs the DOL to set prevailing wages for federal and federally assisted construction projects covered by the Davis-Bacon Act and Related Acts using data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

President Trump Releases FY18 Budget Proposal

On May 23rd, the White House released the president’s proposed budget for the 2018 fiscal year (FY18). Titled “A New Foundation for American Greatness,” Congress is likely to dismiss most or all of the president’s budget -- as they traditionally do with most White House wish lists, but the budget provides insight into White House policy and program priorities.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Public Affairs and Member Services Intern will report to the VP of Public Affairs and Member Services and support various positions within the department depending on the project.

Key Duties
  • Categorize and update sponsor asset library to ensure easy access to information for staff
  • Develop tracking system for sponsorship deliverables and assist with sponsorship fulfillment 
  • Assist meetings team with administrative tasks for national events, including reviewing conference registration lists for targeted marketing outreach
  • Assist with data entry, clean-up of sponsorship contact database and reporting in Sales Force
  • Audit of member participation reports to determine membership status 
  • Prepare slide decks for ABC meetings
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum requirement is to have completed at least two years of college.
  • Attend to detail and strong organizational skills required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Good research and organizational skills  
  • Proficient in Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and other routine computer skills 
  • Professional demeanor and presentation of self
  • Ability to organize and manage several priorities simultaneously while working under pressure and deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication. Proofreading and editing skills a plus.
  • Strong telephone skills 
  • Organizational awareness and resourcefulness - understanding of whom to engage in order to identify solutions and resolve issues
  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills with the ability to work with a demanding work schedule 
  • Effectively utilizes tools/resources to work efficiently 
  • Ability to take ownership of a process and to use problem-solving skills to resolve issues

  • This position is performed in a typical office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
